What your opener is telling you

Dead, humming, or clicking mean different things

An opener that does nothing at all is usually electrical: power, the logic board, or the wall control. An opener that hums or strains but the door doesn't move is often not an opener problem at all: it's frequently a broken spring making the door too heavy for the motor to lift. An opener that clicks without moving the door is commonly a remote, a safety sensor, or a worn drive gear.

Because the symptoms overlap with door problems, not just opener problems, we test the opener and the door's balance together. Replacing an opener motor when the real issue is a worth-fixing spring just means the new opener strains the same way the old one did.

Opener repair: fair questions

My opener just hums but the door doesn't move. What's wrong?

Nine times out of ten that's not the opener at all: it's a broken spring, and the motor is straining against a door that's suddenly too heavy to lift. See our broken spring page, and stop pressing the button in the meantime.

My opener clicks but nothing happens. What does that mean?

Usually a remote or wall control issue, a misaligned safety sensor, or a worn drive gear inside the unit. We test each on-site rather than guess.

Do you repair my opener's brand?

Yes, we repair every major brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Garaga, Clopay and more, regardless of who installed it.

Should I repair my opener or replace it?

Repair, in most cases: it's usually far less than a new unit, and we're repair specialists first. We only recommend replacement when a part genuinely isn't available or the unit is beyond a reasonable repair, and we'll show you why.

Is a dead opener an emergency?

Not on its own, but if it's left your door stuck open or closed, that becomes a priority call. See our stuck door page.

Opener not responding, at all?

We repair every major brand and diagnose the real cause on-site: same day, firm price before we start.
