What's actually happening
Garage door springs (torsion springs mounted above the door, or extension springs running along the tracks) do the heavy lifting. They counterbalance the door's full weight so the opener, or you by hand, only has to move it, not lift it. When a spring breaks, that counterbalance is gone: the door becomes dead weight, which is why it slams down, won't lift, or stalls halfway.
Springs fail from ordinary wear: most are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, and Montreal's temperature swings speed that up. A broken spring on its own doesn't damage anything else immediately, but a door that's forced open on a broken spring puts serious strain on the cables, opener and tracks, turning a one-part fix into a bigger repair.
