Why Won't My Garage Door Close When It's Cold Out?

Cold-weather garage doors that won't close usually trace back to a handful of causes. Here's how to tell what's going on.

A garage door that closed fine all fall and suddenly won’t close once the temperature drops is one of the most common cold-weather calls we get. The good news is that it’s rarely a mystery: there are a small number of usual suspects, and most of them are quick for a technician to identify.

The safety sensors are misreading the cold

Those two small sensor “eyes” near the bottom of the track can be affected by cold and moisture in ways they aren’t in summer. Condensation or frost on the sensor lenses can block or scatter the infrared beam between them, and most openers respond to a broken or unreliable beam by refusing to close the door at all, often with a blinking light on the opener as the only clue. Before assuming anything more serious, check both sensors for frost, condensation, or a spider web, and wipe them clean and dry. Also check that neither sensor has been bumped out of alignment by something stored nearby.

Grease and lubricant thickening up

Old, cheap, or heavily built-up lubricant on the tracks and rollers can thicken noticeably in cold temperatures, adding resistance right when the opener has the least tolerance for extra resistance. This is different from a spring problem: it shows up as a door that moves slowly or jerkily rather than one that won’t move at all. If your door hasn’t been serviced in a while, this is a legitimate maintenance item, though we’d rather a technician assess and apply the right product than guess with something off the shelf that isn’t rated for the temperature swings a garage sees.

The door is frozen to the ground

If moisture on the garage floor freezes overnight, the bottom seal of the door can actually bond to the floor with a thin layer of ice. When the opener tries to lift a door that’s frozen down, it either stalls, trips the force sensor and stops, or in the worst case, strains a cable or spring trying to break the ice free. If you notice ice at the base of the door, don’t force it with the opener. Clear it gently first.

The opener’s force settings are tripping

Openers are designed to stop and reverse if they meet more resistance than expected, and cold weather increases resistance across the board: stiffer springs, thicker grease, tighter-fitting weatherstripping. If your force settings were tuned for warmer months, the opener may now be reading normal cold-weather resistance as an obstruction and refusing to complete the cycle. This is a setting worth having a technician review, rather than cranking it up yourself: the force setting is a safety limit, not just a nuisance to override.

A spring or cable issue that cold weather exposed

Sometimes cold weather doesn’t cause the problem: it just reveals one that was already there. A spring near the end of its life often loses just enough tension in the cold to finally stop doing its job, even though it was “getting by” in warmer months. If none of the checks above explain what’s going on, this is worth having inspected rather than repeatedly trying to force the door through its cycle.

What to do in the meantime

If your door won’t close, don’t leave it stuck open: that’s a security issue in itself. Use the manual release to close it by hand if you can do so safely, and avoid repeatedly trying the opener if it’s stalling or straining, since that can turn a minor issue into a bigger repair.
