Before you call for repair, here are the safe checks and resets worth trying when your garage door opener stops working.
A garage door opener that won’t respond is one of the most common calls we get, and one of the easiest to misdiagnose over the phone. Sometimes it’s a dead battery in the remote. Sometimes it’s a genuinely failed motor. The checks below are safe for any homeowner to try and can save you a service call, but they stop where the opener’s internal mechanics start: that part is worth leaving to a technician.
It sounds obvious, but it’s the single most common cause of a “dead” opener. Check that the unit is plugged in, that the outlet hasn’t tripped a GFCI reset button (there’s usually a small button on the outlet itself), and that your home’s breaker for the garage hasn’t tripped. If the opener’s light doesn’t come on at all, this is where to start.
Remotes and wireless keypads run on small batteries that die quietly: the unit doesn’t warn you, it just stops responding. Swap in a fresh battery before assuming anything else is wrong. If a wall-mounted control panel inside the garage still operates the door normally but the remote doesn’t, that isolates the problem to the remote itself, not the opener.
Every opener made in the last few decades has two small sensor “eyes” mounted a few inches off the ground on either side of the door track. If they’re misaligned, dirty, or something is blocking the beam between them, most openers will refuse to close the door at all, often blinking a warning light instead. Check that both sensors are pointed directly at each other, wipe any dust or cobwebs off the lenses, and make sure nothing (a stored bike, a bag of salt, a bin) is sitting in the beam path. This is genuinely one of the most common “broken opener” calls that turns out to be a sensor knocked out of alignment.
Most openers can be reset by unplugging the unit for about 30 seconds and plugging it back in. This clears a lot of minor electronic glitches without touching anything mechanical. If your opener has a “learn” or “smart” button (usually on the motor unit itself), you can also try re-syncing your remote to it by following the manufacturer’s instructions on the button: press it once, then press your remote button within the following 30 seconds. If you don’t have the manual, most manufacturers post them online by model number, which is usually printed on the motor housing.
If the opener runs but the door doesn’t move, or moves only partway before stopping or reversing, that’s not an electronics problem, it’s almost always mechanical: a spring, cable, or track issue that the opener’s force sensors are correctly detecting and refusing to push through. Don’t increase the “force” setting on the opener to push past this. That setting exists as a safety limit, and overriding it to force a door past resistance it shouldn’t have is how people get hurt or burn out a motor.
