A look at what garage door insulation does and doesn't do for a Montreal home's heating costs, and when it's worth caring about.
Quebec winters mean a lot of homeowners look at their heating bill in January and start wondering what’s leaking heat out of the house. The garage door is an obvious suspect: it’s a huge panel of material on an exterior wall, and it’s often the least insulated part of the house. Whether it’s actually worth addressing depends a lot on what’s on the other side of that door.
If your garage shares a wall with living space (especially if there’s a room above it, or the door to the house opens directly into the garage), the temperature in the garage affects your home’s heating load more than people expect. A garage that sits near freezing all winter is effectively a giant cold buffer pressed against your house. An insulated door helps keep that buffer closer to a stable temperature, which reduces how hard your furnace has to work on the wall and any room adjacent to it.
If your garage is detached, or attached but the wall and door to the house are already well insulated and sealed, the payoff from garage door insulation is much smaller: you’re insulating a cold space that isn’t doing much to your heating bill either way.
Garage doors come in a range of construction: single-layer steel with no insulation, double-layer with a foam core, and triple-layer with foam plus an interior steel or vinyl backing. The insulation value is usually described with an R-value, similar to attic or wall insulation: the higher the number, the more resistance to heat transfer. An insulated door also tends to be more rigid and better sealed against air leaks around the edges, which in practice matters as much as the R-value itself. A door that seals well against wind stops cold air infiltration, which is often the bigger comfort problem in a Quebec winter, not just heat loss through the panel material.
Even a well-insulated door won’t perform if the seals around it are torn, compressed flat, or frozen stiff. The bottom seal, the seals along the sides, and the seal where the panels meet the frame are all doing real work keeping wind-driven cold air out. If your garage door door feels drafty, check the weatherstripping condition before assuming you need a whole new insulated door: worn seals are a much cheaper fix and sometimes solve most of the problem on their own.
If your current door is in good mechanical shape (springs, tracks, and opener all working fine), replacing it purely to gain insulation value is a bigger project than most homeowners realize, and we’d rather be honest about that than sell you a door you don’t need. If the garage genuinely affects your comfort or heating bill, it’s worth having a real conversation about your specific setup: attached or detached, heated or not, current seal condition, before assuming a full door replacement is the answer.
