Steel, wood, aluminum, and composite garage doors each handle Montreal's freeze-thaw cycles and road salt differently. Here's the honest comparison.
If you’re far enough along that you’re comparing garage door materials, you’re probably looking at replacement rather than repair, and that’s a legitimate conversation to have, even though we’re a repair-first company. Montreal’s climate is genuinely rough on garage doors: big temperature swings, humidity, road salt tracked in every winter, and UV exposure in summer. The material matters more here than in a milder climate.
Steel is the most common residential garage door material for a reason: it’s durable, relatively low-maintenance, and handles temperature swings without warping. The tradeoff is rust, particularly at the bottom edge and around any dings where the protective coating gets chipped, which is exactly where road salt and slush concentrate over a winter. A quality steel door with a proper galvanized coating and decent paint finish holds up well for years, but it’s worth periodically checking the bottom panel and any scratches for early rust and addressing them before they spread.
Steel doors also come in different gauges (thicknesses). Thinner, cheaper steel dents more easily and can flex in high wind, which matters if your garage faces an exposed direction. Heavier gauge steel costs more upfront but resists denting and holds its shape better over time.
Wood garage doors look genuinely great and suit certain house styles well, but they’re the highest-maintenance option in a climate like ours. Wood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature, and without consistent sealing and repainting or restaining, it will warp, crack, or rot faster in Quebec’s freeze-thaw cycles than in a drier or more stable climate. If you want the look of wood without the maintenance burden, composite or steel doors with wood-grain finishes have gotten good enough that most people can’t tell the difference from the driveway.
Aluminum doors resist rust entirely, which sounds ideal for a salted climate, but aluminum is a soft metal and dents easily, especially the lighter-gauge versions often used in full-view or glass-panel doors. If a snowblower, hockey stick, or car bumper is a realistic risk in your garage, aluminum will show it. It’s a reasonable choice for garages with less traffic risk, or when the light weight matters for a large or unusually shaped opening.
Composite doors (often wood-fiber and resin) and fiberglass doors are built specifically to resist the things that hurt wood and steel: they don’t rot, don’t rust, and don’t dent as easily as aluminum. They typically cost more than basic steel but less than real wood, and they hold paint or finish well over Quebec’s seasonal swings. For homeowners who want low maintenance without giving up much on appearance, this category has gotten a lot more common in the last several years.
Regardless of material, two things affect how well a door survives a Montreal winter more than the material choice itself: the quality of the weatherstripping and bottom seal, and how consistently the tracks and hardware are kept clear of salt buildup. A mid-range steel door that’s properly sealed and maintained will often outlast a premium door that isn’t.
